About South Beach

South Beach is a city on a barrier island in Florida between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay. Its official name is Miami Beach, but don't confuse this with Miami itself which is on the mainland.

Miami Beach has two parts: South Miami Beach, which is the section below 25th Street, and is the trendy part, usually abbreviated to SoBe. Above 25th Street is the less ‘hip' North Miami Beach.

Getting There

Drive east from Miami International Airport, for about 10 miles. The blue #2 signs lead you in the right direction for the beaches. The road takes you through a toll (fifty cents) into Interstate 195, and then the Julia Tuttle Causeway. Stay right and take the Alton Road south exit.

If you are traveling by taxi, it should cost a flat rate of around $24.

The Weather

The weather in South Beach is beautiful, with great temperatures all year round, although the summer can be hot and humid. The temperature range is around 63-88°F (17 to 28°C). Be careful during May to September, which is the hurricane season. This is the time when you can get cheaper rates on hotel rooms, airfares and so on, though the chances of actually being caught in a hurricane are slim.

Transport

If you are trying to decide whether or not to rent a car, the decision depends on what you plan to do while you are in South Beach. If you are spending most of your time on the beach, or visiting night clubs and cafes, then it's not really worth your while to rent a car, especially as parking can be difficult and expensive.

However if you want to go somewhere such as the keys or the mainland, which would not be practical by cab, then it could be worth your while to rent a car, and there are several agencies in South Beach.

Money

Holidays here can cost as much as you are prepared to spend, up to a penthouse at the Delano for as much as $2,200 a night. However there are cheaper alternatives, the cheapest being hostels such as the Clay Hotel & International Hostel (305/534-2988) and the Banana Bungalow (800/7 HOSTEL or 305/538-1951). Prices at these hostels range from $12 to $16 per person per night for a bed in a dormitory, up to $40 to $50 for a room, according to the time of year.

The same sort of price range applies to food. You can buy lunch for around $5 in a variety of places, including delis, cafes and pastry shops. The News Café on Ocean Drive is one of the area's must-see places. Dinner of course is more expensive, or you could check out one of the family run bodegas where you can make dinner yourself.
