Things to See and Do in South Beach
Dade Heritage Days
This is an annual celebration of the environmental, architectural and cultural heritage of the Miami-Dade region, which happens around April.
Art Deco on the Bay Boat Tour
Dr George takes you on a boat ride on historic Biscayne Bay to see the islands, bridges and causeways, as well as hotels and homesteads around it; included is a description of the Art Deco District.
Miami Metro Zoo
This is one of America's top ranking zoos, where you can learn about the wildlife of the area and sample organic fruit which is grown here. Once you have paid the entry fee, all activities are free.
Stiltsville/Key Biscayne Boat Tour
Stiltsville is a legendary town, literally on stilts, in the middle of Biscayne Bay. Recent legislation means Stiltsville may not be here for long, so take this three hour evening tour while you can.
Also on the tour you can see Cape Florida Lighthouse and other sights of Virginia Key and Key Biscayne and learn about the history of the area.
The National Parks
Biscayne National Park
This 180,000 acre park in the southern part of Biscayne Bay, north of the Keys and south of Miami, is almost all under water, but you can see it from a glass bottomed boat or by snorkeling (snorkels can be rented at the park). Here you can see sea turtle, manatee and many types of tropical fish, as well as sponges and amazing coral reefs. Out of the water there are over 170 bird species to be spotted.
Everglades National Park
This park is a great place to paddle out in a rented canoe and camp out, but there are also boat tours from Flamingo and Everglades City, as well as a number of well placed boardwalks. Whichever way you choose to look around the park, you will see a variety of wildlife, including fish, birds and alligators (careful not to feed these!).
The Everglades
You can take a twelve hour tour by bus, boat, airboat and on foot, which departs from Bayside, Biscayne Blvd., and begins in modern Miami with a re-creation of the ‘Everglades of Old'. Then follows an airboat ride in Big Cypress and a relaxed lunch.
Next is a visit to the Smallwood Store, which is famous as the oldest trading post in south west Florida, and a two hour boat trip round the Ten Thousand Islands. The tour finishes with a sumptuous meal.
The Arts
